Introduction

BACKGROUND OF BANGLADESH UNIVERSITY OF HEALTH SCIENCES
Bangladesh University of Health Sciences (BUHS) was established in mid-2012 with one of the aims of upholding the philanthropic philosophy of National Professor Dr. Muhammad Ibrahim, Founder of the Diabetic Association of Bangladesh (BADAS). The University is the first ever private university in Bangladesh specialized in health sciences education originated with inherent values for innovative approach to promote quality education leading to prepare time-befitted health professionals for under taking responsibilities for universal humanitarian services.

The dream of the foundation of the specialized university for new generation came into reality with the patronization of the Government by the allocation of spacious land in Mirpur, Dhaka and subsequently in benevolence of the Health Care Development Project (HCDP), a Bangladesh-Netherlands joint collaboration project for the establishment of Bangladesh Institute of Health Sciences and Hospital (BIHS), the predecessor of the University (BUHS) conducted MPhil and MPH programs in the public health disciplines, MS in Laboratory Technology and MHI in Health Informatics over a five years period with dedicated faculty members of BIRDEM and other reputed academies. The Institute launched the programs under University of Dhaka and Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujib Medical University (BSMMU) with support from the Norwegian Institute of Master Studies (NOMA), Norway and the Rockefeller Foundation, USA.

National Professor A K Azad Khan, President of BADAS and Chairman, Board of Trustees of BUHS, has tremendously contributed to the establishment of the University, as a vanguard. He has been extending intellectual efforts and other necessary supports to flourish the University as a center of international excellence. Prof. Dr. Faridul Alam, after taking the helm of the University as the second Vice-Chancellor, has made rapid improvements of the University within a short period with his pragmatic leadership and proven academic excellence as a physician, as a researcher and as a academician in the health sector.

The University offers 27 undergraduate and postgraduate academic programs under four faculties, such as Faculty of Basic Sciences, Faculty of Public Health, Faculty of Allied Health sciences and Faculty of Health Engineering and Technology. These Programs have been implemented with the recognition of the Government and in accreditation of the Bangladesh University Grants Commission of Bangladesh (UGC).

The University maintains a congenial academic atmosphere with constant supervisions of hundreds of committed and dedicated faculty members. Around 1,500 students have been pursuing various programs and around, 1000 students are already employed in various renowned organizations at home and abroad. Apart from this, six academic programs (2 in Bachelors and 4 in Masters) have been proposed to be launched soon.
