Tairunnessa Memorial Medical College & Hospital is an institution of Tairunnessa Memorial Medical Centre Limited. Since its inception, Tairunnessa Memorial Medical Centre has been playing an important role in developing human resources for health in Bangladesh.
Shamsul HaqueWith the initiative of its Founder Chairman M. Shamsul Hoque, it started its journey with a small outpatient department, at Konia, Gazipur which over the years has turned into an impressive prestigious hospital and research complex – TMMC Hospital, with 600 bedded multidisciplinary hospital complex – has been recognized nationally and internationally as a centre of excellence for heart diseases and research.
To maintain the reputation of TMMC Medical Centre in the field of higher education and research and to remain in the forefront of health care services, technology and education – increasing the need for highly motivated professionally competent manpower for the health sector can hardly be emphasized. It is in this context, the founder chairman decided to establish Tairunnessa Memorial Medical College and develop it as a centre of excellence, so as to demonstrate a high standard of graduate education in Medicine, so badly needed in the country. The chairman also resolved to name the college after his mother, late Tairunnessa, a great social reformer.

GOAL
The goal of the Tairunnessa Memorial Medical College is to provide an excellent broad-based education with a focus on professional development for the students to equip them with knowledge, skill ana attitude necessary not only to address the priority health problems of the community but also to acquire a firm basis for future training and studies. Students shall:
- Acquire a KNOWLEDGE and UNDERST ANDING of health and its promotion, and of diseases; their prevention and management, in the context of whole individual and his or her place in the family and the society;
- Acquire and become proficient in basic clinical SKILLS such as the ability to obtain a patients’ history, to undertake a comprehensive clinical examination and Interpret the findings and to demonstrate competence in the performance of basic technical procedures;
- Acquire and demonstrate ATTITUDES necessary for the achievement of high standard of clinical practice in relation to care of individuals and populations; and to his or her own personal development.
CAMPUS
The present campus of the college is located, 9 KM from The Shahjala Internation Airport, at Konia of Gazipur City ( near Boardbazar ), the medical college, including the hospital, stands on the Dhaka-Mymensingh highway-just outside the capital city.
The administrative offices and academic departments are housed in a campus surrounded by a picturesque lush green environment of the area.
The buildings are well furnished and suitably equipped to accommodate classrooms, seminars, dissection hall, laboratories, museum, library, students’ common rooms and snack shop.
Objectives
At the end of the Course students shall
1. Acquire know ledge and understanding of:
- a.) the sciences upon which Medicine depends and the scientific and experimental methods;
- b.) the structure, function and normal growth and development of the human body and the workings of the mind and their interaction, the factors which may disturb these, and the disorders of structure and function which may result;
- c.) the aetiology, natural history and prognosis of the common mental and physical ailments. Students must have experience of emergencies and a good knowledge of the commoner diseases of the community and of ageing processes;
- d.) normal pregnancy and childbirth, the commoner obstetric emergencies, the principles of ante-natal and post-natal care, and medical aspects of family planning and psycho-sexual counseling;
- e.) the principles of prevention and of therapy, including health education, the amelioration of suffering and disability, rehabilitation, the maintenance of health in old age, and the care of the dying;
- f) Use laboratory and other diagnostic and therapeutic services effectively and economically, and in the best interests of his patients.
2. Develop the professional skills necessary to:
- a) Elicit, record and interpret the relevant medical history, symptoms and physical signs, and to identify the problems and how these may be managed;
- b) Carry out simple practical clinical procedures;
- c) Deal with common medical emergencies;
- d) Communicate effectively and sensitively with patients and their relatives;
- e) Communicate clinical information accurately and concisely, both verbally and in writing, to medical colleagues and to other professionals involved in the care of the patient;
- f) Use laboratory and other diagnostic and therapeutic services effectively and economically, and in the best interests of his patients.
3. Develop appropriate attitudes to the practice, of medicine, which include
- a) Recognition that a blend of scientific and humanitarian approaches is needed in medicine;
- b) A capacity for self education, so that the student may continue to develop and extend his knowledge and skills throughout his professional life, and recognize his obligation to contribute if he can to the progress of medicine and to new knowledge;
- c) The ability to assess the reliability of evidence and the relevance of scientific knowledge, to reach conclusions by logical deduction or by experiment, and to evaluate critically the methods and standards of medical practice;
- d) A continuing concern for the interests and dignity of his patients;
- e) An ability to appreciate the limitations of his own knowledge, combined with a willingness, when necessary, to seek further help;
- f) The achievement of good working relationships with members of the other health care professions.
TMMCH ACADEMIC SYSTEM
Courses Offered
The college offers 5-year MBBS course, as approved by Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council, leading to MBBS degree of the University of Dhaka. The academic session shall be from July to June each year. The first session started from June 2002.
Expense of the study
Tuition and other fees payable at the time of admission will be notified in the College notice board.
Tuition fees for the 1st year shall be payable at the time of admission. Subsequently tuition fees are payable on quarterly basis, Le., by 15th June, September, December and March. Students who fall to pass their final examination in five years time will have to pay the prescribed tuition fees for the period beyond five years.
Conduct and Discipline
During their stay in the college all students are required to abide by all the rules and regulations of the college. Non-adherence to these rules and regulations makes the students liable to disciplinary action, which may range from warning to expulsion from the college. Students in TMMC are forbidden, to organize any union, association or society other than those set up by the college authority in order to enrich their physical, intellectual and ethical development.

LIBRARY
Library has a collection of textbooks, reference titles and journals in various subjects and provides up-to-date information to students and teachers. It has user-friendly open-stack easy access system. Computers which provide online access to Internet are available. Faculty and students will also have access to TMMC LIBRARY located at hospital building, which an initial collection of 4500 books and monographs; and regularly subscribe many medical journals.
The library also has electronic media facilities for storage and retrieval of information such as MEDLINE on CD-ROM and POPLINE and information dissemination services through CAS (Current Awareness Services) and SDI (Selective Dissemination of’ Information) from MEDLINE and POPLINE database.
Boys Hostel
Shamsul Haque Building, Total no of seats are around 200. there is a Boys, hostel opposite the College building which has five floors and total number of rooms are 48. Around 200 students can be accommodated here also.
Girls Hostel
Lima Girls Hostel is situated adjacent to the college building. It is a storied building with 50 rooms. Where 155 girls are residing. Besides there are 48 more rooms in the admin building for foreigner girls.
ADMISSION
Admission is on merit basis and shall follow the same criteria as prescribed by the Ministry of Health and Family Welfare and Bangladesh Medical and Dental Council.
Requirements
Candidates who have passed SSC Examination in any group and HSC Examination in Science with Physics, Chemistry and Biology from any recognized Board or University of Bangladesh and obtained a minimum of 1300 marks (without any 3rd Division) and with pass marks in Biology are eligible to apply. Those who have passed ‘0’ and ‘A’ level examinations and have equivalent marks are also eligible.
Students who have spent two years after their HSC, A-Level or equivalent examination need not apply.

Selection of the Candidates
Final selection of candidates shall be on merit, based on scores of Admission tests, SSC and HSC Examinations. Written test shall consist of an hour’s test consisting of MCQ’s on Physics, Chemistry, Biology, English and General Knowledge.
Admission to the Course
List of finally selected candidates will be notified in the College Notice Board. Candidates finally selected shall have to be admitted by the announced date and time. Otherwise their selection may be cancelled and the place will be filled up from among the candidates in waiting list.
